It’s About the Mind Before the Movement

Too many people think groundwork is just about getting the horse to move their feet.

But movement without meaning is wasted energy.

Groundwork is how we shape:

A horse doesn't give you their trust just because you showed up with a halter.

They give it when:

  • You show you can lead without force
  • You offer pressure without panic
  • You release at the right time
  • You listen, not just ask

Groundwork gives you time and space to prove who you are to them.

And in that process, the horse learns:

  • “This human notices when I try.”
  • “This human respects my space.”
  • “This human keeps me safe.”

So next time you’re working on the ground, don’t think of it as preparation. Think of it as the first chapter of the ride.

The principle underneath

Groundwork transfers to riding because the horse is learning a response to a cue, and a cue can be re-presented in a new context once the response is fluent. What does not transfer is anything the horse only ever performed under restraint. That is the practical content of the rule that if you cannot get it on the ground you will not get it in the saddle. You are not training a body, you are building responses that survive a change of context.
